Join hybrid cardiologist Dr. Frank A. Laws to learn more about atrial fibrillation risk factor modification and cutting edge AFib treatments.

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is the most common abnormal heart rhythm. AFib can have a significant negative impact on quality of life and increase risk of stroke and heart failure. Early intervention and aggressive risk factor modification are vital in the management of atrial fibrillation.

Common risk factors for atrial fibrillation include smoking, excessive alcohol intake, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, valvular heart disease, and sleep apnea. Most of these risk factors are modifiable which means that by appropriately addressing and treating them we can decrease the frequency and severity of atrial fibrillation.

Treating modifiable risk factors also makes atrial fibrillation treatments more effective. For example, a person with treated sleep apnea is 40% more likely to be AFib free after an atrial fibrillation ablation than a person whose sleep apnea is not being treated.
